Deepfakes and their positive and negative sides

Deepfakes are a very popular topic these days, especially in media where sometimes speeches of some people are completely faked and may cause desinformation. A deepfake is a process that uses a video as a base and videos or photos of a person that is being faked. The name comes from "Deep Learning" which is a form of artificial intelligence. The A.I. learns how to use large sets of data that are used to face swap videos making realistic-looking fake media. There are numerous cases of  deepfakes being used to make a politician or a celebrity say something that they didn't say or do. For example a deepfake of Mark Zuckerberg saying that "whoever controlls the data controlls the future" caused a lot of accusations of collecting people's data from Facebook to use in Mark's own purpose. Not long after the case was solved because it turned out that the whole video was a deepfake. Despite all the bad things this technology can do it has also a lot of good uses like in movie making. Deepfakes are commonly used in movies to create or enhance special effects or animated creatures and de-age actors.

  1. I would still think they can do a lot of harm, especially in politics.
There should be a free and widely available app that could quickly deconstruct a video to determine whether it's original. There are such apps for photos that can trace the original context and publication date where a photo first appeared. It's quite helpful in debunking fake news.
